The ISAAW Board has released the following statement:
We at ISAAW are disheartened by the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The Supreme Court has banned outright safe, legal abortion access for women across the United States and left to individual states the decision to permit abortions, leaving many women vulnerable. Women in states where abortion is illegal will have little to no recourse in the instances of rape, incest, or medical complications endangering the mother or child. Here in New Jersey, thanks to proactive leadership, Governor Murphy and the New Jersey State Legislature have already codified abortion action access, thus ensuring that New Jersey women continue to have legal access to abortion.
Our mission to empower women has never been so important. We are heartened to see Bill A3975 introduced in the New Jersey State Legislature, which aims to bar civil and criminal liability for any New Jersey abortion provider who provides abortions to out-of-state patients in violation of other states’ laws. We urge the New Jersey State Legislature and Governor Murphy to make this important bill law. We encourage the New Jersey State Legislature to consider introducing legislation similar to Connecticut’s law, which permits countersuits from abortion providers.
We encourage our communities to call their state and local representatives and voice their support for Bill A3975. Our voice and our vote are the most powerful tools at our disposal to ensure that women have access to safe abortions. The rights of women are integral to a more just and vibrant democracy.
