Gun Reform
From 2013 to 2018, 405 incidents of gunfire have been identified as occurring on school grounds. Safety in schools from gun violence, such as the violence experienced in Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Santa Fe, has become a leading issue for many parents. Moreover, gun violence through mass shootings has taken place at various houses of worship, including at a gurdwara at Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Current proposals to curb gun violence include closing loopholes in gun sales, preventing guns in schools and classrooms, stronger background checks, and Red Flag laws. Governor Murphy signed an executive order on September 10, 2019 to use the state’s powers to hold gun manufacturers, retailers, and the financial institutions that provide services to those entities accountable.
